To give an example of how complex this is the National Science Foundation list the following fields under Engineering;

  • Engineering (bioengineering, environmental systems, civil and mechanical systems, chemical and transport systems, electrical and communications systems, and design and manufacturing)

While the Department of Homeland Security adds several fields for inclusion to allow visas for an extended stay for practical hands on if they graduated from a US school.
